Product Description
It's hardly surprising this camera won the prize for best camera 2008 at the EISA (European Imaging and Sound Association) awards. The EOS 1000D is designed for anyone ready to take the next step in creative photography. This practical camera comes with a built-in EOS cleaning system and a 10-megapixel CMOS sensor. The EOS 1000D also integrates a low-pass filter with a self-cleaning unit, which captures and removes the tiniest dust particles every time the camera is switched on. A DIGIC III image processor allows you to take professional pictures continuously at speeds of up to 3 frames per second, while its on-screen viewing mode enables you to monitor your creations before and after taking them. Among the 1000D?s other user-friendly features you?ll find a set of easy-to-use menus and quick access functions, an automatic focus and a comprehensive range of white balance settings, not to mention a number of scene modes, so you can add the finishing touches to your shot! The EOS 1000D is supplied here with the EF-S 18-55 mm lens.

I purchased this as a novice but have learned a lot reading through the in depth manual. I find this camera very capable and easy to use in comparison to the d100 and d80 cameras they have at work!! very nice.

1 out of 5 stars Last Canon product I will ever buy!   December 8, 2008

Had the camera for 2 months now, really liked it at first, excellent results from the I.S. lenses.

BUT it now has the infamous "Error 99" message and has stopped working completely, it appears this is a well known fault usually a shutter problem (after checking battery, card, contacts etc etc etc)

This now makes 3 out of 4 Canon cameras I have purchased in the last 3 years that have faults.

Its such a shame, I really love the product but I cant use a product I no longer trust.

I am very pleased with the canon Eos 1000d After having a bad experiance with the canon eos 400d i can say that the Eos 1000d has restored my faith in canon.

The live view on this is handy but best to use manual focus with live view.
When shooting in L,Jpeg mode the quality of the images are just standard but however if you shoot in Raw mode and then import the raw files using software the images and of far better quality.

IS ,Image stabilisation which is included with the lens makes so much difference before when using my old 400d the images would come out blury from camera shake but not anymore. Even in low light there is far less camera shake.

You can take around 300 raw images on a 4gig memory card. The settings are easy to handle for those who just want to click and shoot can using the auto mode but for more experianced users can use manual or program mode. The flash does popup in low light when using auto mode thats why i stick to manual mode.

I cant fault this camera even in low light iv had great results without a tripod. Cant wait to test it some more.

I am rating this 4 start not because of the camera but because the delivery was delayed on this item when i had taken a day off to wait in for it which turned in too two days off but saying that in all fairness it wasnt amazon's fault it was the courier that got delayed.

3 out of 5 stars Am I just unlucky??   December 1, 2008

After much thought and review reading I bought this camera on 19th November. Since I have received it I have taken numerous photos and my opinion is as follows:

About 90% of my photos were out of focus, the focal point being behind the subject.

The flash pops up even when outdoors on a bright, sunny day and fires.

I don't know if it's related to my last point but there seems to be quite a lot of difference in exposure, even between two photos that are basically identical.

I have read the manual and tried numerous combinations of manual settings, as well as using the fully auto mode to no avail.

I was really looking forward to at last getting this camera as I am a keen amateur and was expecting beautiful photos, but my 10 year old 3MP compact Fuji takes far superior ones.

I am awaiting a response from Canon about my problems.

As I say in my title: Am I just unlucky and got a "bad one"?

Update 8/12/08:
Amazon were brilliant and sent me a replacement. When it arrived I assembled it and started taking photos. I'm sorry to say that the results were the same. Slightly out of focus images, usually just behind the subject. I think it might be the lens as both the ones I got rattled and did not appear to be well put together. If you use manual focus in live view it is possible to get a sharp image but if you even touch the focus ring it goes blurry.
As a result both cameras have been returned to Amazon and I am now looking at a Nikon D60.

Update 14/12/08:
Had a good look at the Nikon D60 in a local shop and tried it out. I have just ordered the D80 version with the 18-135mm lens from Amazon I was that impressed with it!
I eagerly await its arrival!
