Product Description With this high-class digital camera, Nikon decided not to increase its impressive megapixel power but to bring together all the elements that make for a great camera! Here it is, the D40! The most compact digital camera ever developed by Nikon! The D40 is Nikon's first ever camera to offer all the advantages of the "Image Total Nikon" system thanks to its compatibility with Nikon AF-S lenses. More compact and lighter than its predecessor, the D40 has a 6-megapixel sensor and incorporates a 2.5" LCD screen for ease of use. Extremely fast and always ready to take photos, the D40 has a starting time of just 0.18 sec. This camera also has a continuous focusing mode of 2.5 photos per second, which is ideal for sports photographers! Supplied with an AF-S DX 18-55cm lens suitable for the most common photos, the D40 is also equipped with an EN-EL9 1000 mAh battery, which allows you to take 470 photos on one single battery charge. The D40 is without a doubt the wisest choice for all landscape lovers and photographers looking for a fun-to-use digital camera!

I love this camera January 1, 2009 Scally Cross (Horley, England) 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
Bought this as a christmas pressie to myself, as a bundle with the 18-55mm lens, and a sigma 55-200mm lens. Spent the day at london zoo playing with it - and all I can say is WOW! New to DSLR's - though I had a bridge camera that I stopped using because of it's limitations. Only downsides I can find are 1. the on/off switch is way to easy to hit when packing the camera away - leading to run down batteries, and 2. The sheer volume of options - it's going to be a lifetime of learning to master them all - but what fun I'm going to have while playing!

I will not try to go into technical details. The other reviews say it all. Its light,Quick and well made. Does the job with wonderful results. The price was good and delivery excellent. My wife nagged me not to open it till xmas.Xmas day seemed to take forever. Finally it arrived and nearly cut myself in the rush to get at it. I was very happy with it and spent the entire morning trying it out. The manual covers every thing but I found it a little confusing. Have sent for a book on it, also from Amazon. Why? Well given Amazons service to the many things I have bought from them it's my most used supplier. Go on, you won't regret it.
Love it December 22, 2008 Mr. M. Watterson 2 out of 2 found this review helpful
This is my first Dslr and I am very happy with it, it was a choice between the D40 and the Sony A200K for me. They are similar prices at the time of writing and the Sony is 10MP and has anti-vibrate built into the camera body, so is better spec than the Nikon really. They both get good reviews too. So why did I pick the Nikon? Because it was a Nikon really, it is also supposed to be better build quality and has less "noise" at higher iso's. The kit lens that comes with it is also well thought of by those that know. I might have been just as happy with the Sony, who knows? I just know I fell in love with the Nikon once I had used it a few times.
Smile for the camera! December 7, 2008 A. Lowndes (South Yorkshire, UK) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
I've had this camera a week and there was a customer image shared on amazon that sealed this purchase for me (greyhound running towards photographer on beach). Not that I wasn't mightily impressed with the bulk of the other photos but this was the one to that date that made me click to buy, and it's a decision that so far I've applauded myself for. This is the first Nikon I've owned and I'm pleased as punch with it. If you've got any doubts about the d40 over other, more expensive model Nikons, or even a Nikon over another brand, then google Ken Rockwell and see if his web site does anything to sway your mind. I cannot add anything on the technical front, even at happy-snapper level - others here write excellent reviews that I cannot compete with. But I can tell you that for me this camera leaves a big grin on my face when I look at the photos I'm producing and to be honest they are all mostly done with the camera on auto, a preset program mode, or P-mode without much change from me. (The pictures I've uploaded taken with this camera are some that make me smile the most, even if they are technically lacking!). I don't want to class myself as a complete numpty with a camera but I'm nowhere near as able as I would like to be - the d40 though lets me live the dream! I really enjoy snapping away with this little light box, it's not the first dSLR I've owned but I can already feel that it fits me like a glove. It's the best Christmas present I've bought for myself!
