It works! April 15, 2010 G. MCGREGOR-SMITH (Berkshire) 3 out of 3 found this review helpful
I wanted something larger than an A4 scanner, but found that I just couldn't afford most A3 scanners available on Amazon. The only scanner that appeared to fit my financial constraints was this one.
However, having read the varied opinions expressed in the reviews on this product, I approached this purchase with a real sense of trepidation. Would the hardware and software actually install properly? Would the hardware and software actually work together, and work together well. Or would I have to acknowledge that the less favourable reviews were correct and end up having to send the product back.
I needn't have worried. The instructions were clear and installation was straightforward. I downloaded the drivers onto my PC(this download also included the scanner's operating software) and ignored all the other software on the accompanying CD. I attached the USB cable and plugged the scanner in to the mains, then once the device had been recognised and the driver installed, clicked on the Panel icon in the ScanExpress folder and I was ready to go.
And it works just fine, whether running the scanner from Photoshop elements or Windows fax and scan, I have had no problems at all.
In summary, much better than I had expected, and as good as I had hoped.
Excellent value for money March 17, 2010 Fi (Worcestershire) 1 out of 1 found this review helpful
I use this scanner mostly for book listings and it hasn't failed me in over two years. The colour reproduction is very good, and the OCR software, while not perfect, is more accurate than that of any other scanner I've used. (There's an annoying little glitch, admittedly, with the letter 'h', mostly on basic words like 'the' and 'who', but I just use the 'Replace' function to change 'tli' to 'th'.) Previous scanners have had problems recognising text on red or orange backgrounds, or white text on black, but this one's usually fine.
Occasionally it tells me there's no document in the scanner when there's a black or other very dark coloured book on it, but I've found that if I put a piece of paper over the edge it's usually fine, and if not, for some reason when I turn the book on its side with the paper over it, it gets recognised and I just need to rotate the image. A small inconvenience for the massive benefit of having such a cheap A3 scanner at my command!
What actually worries me most is the thought that if my current one expires, I may not be able to replace it so cheaply, as seems to happen regularly with all my favourite trackball mice!
be REALLY careful January 11, 2010 M. Cooper 1 out of 2 found this review helpful
I bought this. It did not work from day 1. I tried it on repeated computers and it did not work on any. Please be really careful and if you are as stupid as me and do buy it, make sure you return it within 7 days for a refund. This is the fourth scanner I have owned and it has honestly been the most stressful IT experience since I owned a ZX81.
Buyer beware!! Utter rubbish! November 10, 2009 J (London) 5 out of 8 found this review helpful
Barely supported under Leopard and not at all under Snow Leopard I have been trying to make this work with VMWare/Windows but am having patchy results.
Mustek of course have been stoney silent about this budget rubbish product not responding to my, more politely worded, requests to provide support for Snow Leopard. I never had high expectations but this is ridiculous.
The Leopard compatible plugin for Photoshop had the worlds tiniest preview window and extremely limited options but it did work after a fashion, now it just crashes Photoshop. The install under Leopard was painful and difficult, the CD provided doesn't have the right software and Mustek's web site is a maze of misleading dead ends.
Can it really be that hard to update the plugin or write some basic software that works properly on the Mac or even Windows for that matter. The Windows Panel software doesn't allow you to choose the resolution and has no preview window or basic setting accessible in the main selection area.
AVOID LIKE THE PLAGUE this is truly the WORST A3 SCANNER on the market.
Never worked out of the box - terrible support October 23, 2009 Endupendi (UK) 6 out of 7 found this review helpful
Bought the scanner for urgent job 5 weeks ago. Scanner never worked properly from day 1.
Mustek support (based in Ireland) are useless, slow and awkward. Want item (despite being new)to be shipped at my cost for inspection. Won't buy Mustek again or purchase through Misco.
