Digital SLR for Dummies June 27, 2010 Margie Scot (Scotland) This is an excellent book but I feel it is written for people with some basic knowledge of Digital SLR Cameras and not for people like me who have just bought their first dSLR.
That said, I am finding it very informative and like all 'For Dummies' books, it is better to look up a a question about your chosen subject if and when you need to, rather than wade through the whole book from beginning to end.
I would recommend it for those who already have a little basic knowledge of dSLRs and for people like myself perhaps there is an earlier version.
Not dummy enough for me! May 22, 2010 R. Vaughan-payne This is a useful guide for those who have some knowledge of the technical side of digital photography. Not so good if you want an idiot's guide to taking shots in poor light with plenty of tables to show you what settings to use. Older digital SLRs (such as the Minolta Dynax 7D that I have)rely more on settings than clever technology to automate everything and I needed help of a more basic nature. That said, no doubt I will go back to this book as I get more experience.
Useful April 28, 2010 Mrs. G. Cooper I have found this book very useful and informative it does not blind you with jaregon
Such a lot to learn! February 18, 2010 Ms. R. Cox (lincolnshire) So much information I'm bamboozled! Well, I'll take some time to take in all the information in this amazing book, but give me time! I'll be a digital David Bailey before I know it! Now I'm showing my age!! Great book and well worth the money, but is one for dipping into and not reading all at once -the author does point this out at the beginning.
The worst DSLR book I bought (and I bought a few) October 25, 2009 Mrs. C. Leigh (London, England) 8 out of 8 found this review helpful
The writing style is conversational and long winded. If you want to delight in the author's whimsical witticisms then fine. I didn't; I wanted information and advice, and I couldn't find much of it in this book. It could have been written in about a quarter of the number of pages.
Some basics are completely omitted - eg nowhere does the author bother to explain to you what 'WB' ar 'AWB' are. The general map of your camera is unhelpful and will not actually help you to navigate your camera any better.
Get the Collins Complete Photography Course, which is a genuine dummies' guide and which contains practical lessons and projects for you to undertake in order to use and understand the information given. It takes you quite a way beyond the dummies level too. And it lacks the patronising condescension of this book.
